How WorkCover Queensland covers approved hernia surgery
For an accepted WorkCover Queensland claim, once your surgery has prior approval the cost — surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital — is billed directly to the insurer, so there is no out-of-pocket expense to you for the approved treatment.
The key is approval before treatment. WorkCover pays for reasonable medical, hospital and rehabilitation costs related to an accepted work injury, but new treatment such as surgery should be approved in advance. Our rooms request that approval for you and confirm it in writing before anything is scheduled.
On the day, you simply provide your claim number; our practice and the hospital send their accounts straight to your insurer. What hernia repair involves
Most work-related hernias are repaired with a short, planned operation — often as day surgery — using either keyhole (laparoscopic) or open techniques, usually reinforced with a soft mesh.
Dr Goutham chooses the approach to suit your hernia, your job and your general health. Keyhole repair uses a few small incisions and often allows a quicker, more comfortable recovery; open repair remains an excellent, durable option, particularly for certain larger or recurrent hernias. Both are performed under anaesthetic at accredited Brisbane and Redland hospitals.

Will hernia surgery be keyhole or open?+
It depends on your hernia, your job and your health. Dr Goutham may recommend laparoscopic (keyhole) or open repair, usually with a soft mesh to reinforce the repair. He explains the recommended approach and why at your consultation.

Does Dr Goutham perform every type of hernia repair?+
Dr Goutham repairs inguinal/groin, femoral, umbilical, incisional, ventral, epigastric and recurrent abdominal-wall hernias. He assesses hiatus hernias but does not perform hiatal (paraoesophageal) or parastomal hernia repair. When surgery is indicated, he coordinates onward care with an upper-GI specialist.
