Hernia care for the Redlands

A hernia surgeon for the Redlands and Bayside

If you live in the Redlands or wider Bayside and have found a lump or a dragging ache that will not settle, Dr Goutham offers local hernia assessment and repair.

A hernia happens when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall — usually a soft bulge in the groin, around the belly button, or along an old scar. Dr Goutham operates at Mater Private Redland in Cleveland — the Redlands' only private hospital — and also consults at his Spring Hill rooms, serving Cleveland, Capalaba, Victoria Point, Wellington Point, Thornlands, Birkdale, Alexandra Hills, Ormiston and Redland Bay.

What we treat

Hernia repair for Redlands patients

Dr Goutham assesses and repairs the common groin and abdominal-wall hernias seen across the Bayside.

Please note: Dr Goutham does not perform hiatal (paraoesophageal) or parastomal hernia repair — these are referred to upper-GI or colorectal sub-specialists. Hernia care here covers inguinal/groin, femoral, umbilical, incisional, ventral, epigastric and recurrent abdominal-wall hernias.
Where you are seen

Operating locally at Mater Private Redland

Choosing a surgeon who operates at Mater Private Redland means your repair is a short drive from home rather than a trip into central Brisbane.

Mater Private Redland, on Weippin Street in Cleveland, is the only private hospital in the Redlands. Staying local also makes the days around surgery easier — a family member can drop you off and collect you, and your review can be arranged nearby. Dr Goutham also consults at his Spring Hill rooms if a city appointment suits you better.

How it is done

Keyhole and robotic options

Many hernias can be repaired with keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery — a few small cuts rather than one larger one — which for suitable patients means less discomfort and a quicker return to activity.

For selected, more complex hernias Dr Goutham also offers robotic-assisted repair with the Medtronic Hugo system, giving a magnified 3D view and very precise instrument control. See robotic hernia surgery. Open repair remains an excellent, well-proven option — Dr Goutham recommends what fits your hernia and explains why.

Afterwards

Recovery, referral and fees

Most hernia repairs are day surgery or a short stay; many people walk gently the same day, return to desk work in 1–2 weeks, and resume heavier activity by about 4–6 weeks.

You receive written aftercare and a review — see what to expect after hernia surgery. To be seen you will need a GP referral, which also lets you claim the Medicare rebate on your consultation. For privately insured patients we work on a known gap basis, with costs confirmed in writing before any procedure; see hernia surgery cost.

FAQs

Redlands hernia surgery FAQs

Where will my hernia operation take place?+

For Redlands and Bayside patients, Dr Goutham operates at Mater Private Redland in Cleveland — the only private hospital in the Redlands. He also consults at his main rooms at Spring Hill.

Do I need a referral to be seen?+

Yes. As a private patient you need a GP referral. Ask your usual doctor for a referral to a general surgeon for hernia assessment, addressed to Dr Goutham at Upper Edge Surgery.

Can my hernia be fixed with keyhole or robotic surgery?+

Many hernias suit keyhole (laparoscopic) repair, and Dr Goutham offers robotic-assisted repair with the Medtronic Hugo system for selected, more complex hernias. Open repair is also an excellent option. He recommends what fits you, and explains why.

When is a hernia an emergency?+

If the lump becomes hard, very painful or will not push back in, and you feel sick or vomit, the bowel may be trapped (strangulation). Seek urgent care straight away.

How soon can I get back to normal after surgery?+

Most repairs are day or short-stay procedures. You can usually walk gently the same day, return to desk work within 1 to 2 weeks, and resume heavier activity a little later.

Will I see Dr Goutham himself throughout?+

Yes — you see the same surgeon from your first consult through to your operation and follow-up, with no handover to someone you have not met.
