Dr Goutham Sivasuthan
MBBS(UQ), BBiomedSc(UQ) MSurg (USYD), Fellowship-qualified through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeon
Dr Goutham Sivasuthan is an Australian-trained general, laparoscopic (keyhole) and endoscopic surgeon caring for patients across Brisbane, the Redlands and the Sunshine Coast. He looks after a broad range of upper gastrointestinal, abdominal-wall and general surgical conditions — from gallbladder disease and hernias to reflux, skin lesions and bowel investigation.
His approach is calm, thorough and personalised. Every treatment plan is built around your goals and circumstances, with a clear explanation of the options — so you can make a confident, unhurried decision about your care.
Education and Training
Dr Sivasuthan earned a double degree in Medicine and Biomedical Science from the University of Queensland, then completed his medical residency at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Early work in regional centres such as Bundaberg and Mackay shaped a lasting commitment to rural communities — including his ongoing role with the Flying Surgical Service.
He went on to complete rigorous general surgery training at leading Queensland hospitals, including Gold Coast University Hospital, developing advanced skills in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy. After completing his fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he undertook further subspecialty training in upper gastrointestinal and general surgery at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, with a focus on the assessment and management of reflux and complex foregut conditions.
Current Roles
Alongside his private practice, Dr Sivasuthan continues to work in some of Queensland Health’s busiest acute general surgery units. He is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland and a Lecturer at Griffith University, and an accredited endoscopist and colonoscopist with the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA).
He also instructs on the CCrISP (Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient) program, helping train surgical registrars across Australia and New Zealand. In private practice he consults and operates across a network of trusted Brisbane and Redland hospitals, listed below.
Personal Interests
Outside of work, Dr Sivasuthan enjoys time with his wife, young daughter and energetic dog — often out on a local nature walk or at the beach. He keeps active through hiking and training at the gym.
