Hernia care for Moreton Bay

Hernia surgery close to home for Moreton Bay

Dr Goutham repairs hernias for patients across the Moreton Bay region, seen locally at his North Lakes consulting location rather than only in the city.

A hernia is a gap in the muscle wall of the abdomen or groin that lets fat or bowel push through — often a soft bulge, a dragging feeling, or discomfort when you lift or stand. Dr Goutham serves North Lakes, Redcliffe, Mango Hill, Kallangur, Petrie, Narangba, Burpengary, Murrumba Downs and Griffin.

What we treat

Hernia repair for Moreton Bay patients

Dr Goutham repairs the common adult groin and abdominal-wall hernias.

Please note: Dr Goutham does not perform hiatal (paraoesophageal) or parastomal hernia repair — these are referred to upper-GI or colorectal sub-specialists. Hernia care here covers inguinal/groin, femoral, umbilical, incisional, ventral, epigastric and recurrent abdominal-wall hernias.
Where you are seen

Seeing Moreton Bay patients at North Lakes

For the northern bayside and Pine Rivers suburbs, driving into central Brisbane for a surgical consult is a long round trip — so Dr Goutham consults and operates at North Lakes.

This keeps your first appointment close to home for Mango Hill, Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Griffin, Narangba, Burpengary, Petrie and Redcliffe patients. His main rooms at Watkins Medical Centre, Spring Hill are also available if a city appointment suits you better.

How it is done

Keyhole and robotic options

Many hernias can be repaired with keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery — a few small cuts rather than one larger one — which for suitable patients means less discomfort and a quicker return to activity.

For selected, more complex hernias Dr Goutham also offers robotic-assisted repair with the Medtronic Hugo system, giving a magnified 3D view and very precise instrument control. See robotic hernia surgery. Open repair remains an excellent, well-proven option — Dr Goutham recommends what fits your hernia and explains why.

Afterwards

Recovery, referral and fees

Most hernia repairs are day surgery or a short stay; many people walk gently the same day, return to desk work in 1–2 weeks, and resume heavier activity by about 4–6 weeks.

You receive written aftercare and a review — see what to expect after hernia surgery. To be seen you will need a GP referral, which also lets you claim the Medicare rebate on your consultation. For privately insured patients we work on a known gap basis, with costs confirmed in writing before any procedure; see hernia surgery cost.

FAQs

Moreton Bay hernia surgery FAQs

Do I have to travel into Brisbane to see Dr Goutham?+

No. Dr Goutham consults and operates at North Lakes, close to home for Mango Hill, Kallangur, Redcliffe, Murrumba Downs, Petrie, Narangba, Burpengary and Griffin patients. His Spring Hill rooms are also available.

Do I need a referral before booking?+

Yes — you need a GP referral, which also lets you claim the Medicare rebate. Ask your local Moreton Bay GP to refer you to Dr Goutham Sivasuthan at Upper Edge Surgery.

Can my hernia be fixed with keyhole or robotic surgery?+

Many hernias suit keyhole (laparoscopic) repair, and Dr Goutham offers robotic-assisted repair with the Medtronic Hugo system for selected, more complex hernias. Open repair is also an excellent option. He recommends what fits you, and explains why.

When is a hernia an emergency?+

If the lump becomes hard, very painful or will not push back in, and you feel sick or vomit, the bowel may be trapped (strangulation). Seek urgent care straight away.

How soon can I get back to normal after surgery?+

Most repairs are day or short-stay procedures. Most people walk gently the same day, return to light activity within 1 to 2 weeks, and resume heavier lifting a little later.

Will I see the same surgeon throughout?+

Yes — you see Dr Goutham from your first consult through to your operation and follow-up, with no handover.
