Hernia care for Logan

Hernia surgery close to home for Logan

If you live in Logan, you do not need to travel into central Brisbane for hernia care — Dr Goutham consults and operates at sites close to the Logan area.

A hernia is a weak spot in the muscle wall that lets tissue or bowel push through, often a soft lump in the groin, around the belly button, or along an old scar. Dr Goutham serves patients across Springwood, Shailer Park, Loganholme, Daisy Hill, Browns Plains, Beenleigh, Logan Central and Marsden — assessing the hernia, advising whether repair is needed, and operating using keyhole, robotic or open techniques.

What we treat

Hernia repair for Logan patients

Dr Goutham repairs the common groin and abdominal-wall hernias that bring most people to a surgeon.

Please note: Dr Goutham does not perform hiatal (paraoesophageal) or parastomal hernia repair — these are referred to upper-GI or colorectal sub-specialists. Hernia care here covers inguinal/groin, femoral, umbilical, incisional, ventral, epigastric and recurrent abdominal-wall hernias.
Where you are seen

Consulting near Logan — Springwood & Sunnybank

Logan patients are seen at sites that are easy to reach from the Logan area rather than only in the city.

Consultations and procedures are arranged at Springwood, in the heart of Logan City near the Hyperdome, and at Sunnybank Private a short drive north along the motorway. Dr Goutham's main rooms are at Watkins Medical Centre, Spring Hill, for patients who prefer the city. The rooms confirm the best site when you book.

How it is done

Keyhole and robotic options

Many hernias can be repaired with keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery — a few small cuts rather than one larger one — which for suitable patients means less discomfort and a quicker return to activity.

For selected, more complex hernias Dr Goutham also offers robotic-assisted repair with the Medtronic Hugo system, giving a magnified 3D view and very precise instrument control. See robotic hernia surgery. Open repair remains an excellent, well-proven option — Dr Goutham recommends what fits your hernia and explains why.

Afterwards

Recovery, referral and fees

Most hernia repairs are day surgery or a short stay; many people walk gently the same day, return to desk work in 1–2 weeks, and resume heavier activity by about 4–6 weeks.

You receive written aftercare and a review — see what to expect after hernia surgery. To be seen you will need a GP referral, which also lets you claim the Medicare rebate on your consultation. For privately insured patients we work on a known gap basis, with costs confirmed in writing before any procedure; see hernia surgery cost.

FAQs

Logan hernia surgery FAQs

Do I have to travel into Brisbane city for my hernia surgery?+

No. Dr Goutham consults and operates at Springwood, inside Logan City, and at Sunnybank Private a short drive north. His Spring Hill rooms are available if you prefer the city.

Which site is closest to my Logan suburb?+

For most Logan suburbs — Shailer Park, Loganholme, Daisy Hill, Logan Central and Marsden — Springwood is usually nearest. Browns Plains and Beenleigh patients are an easy drive from Springwood or Sunnybank.

Do I need a referral before I can be seen?+

Yes. Ask your Logan GP for a referral to Dr Goutham Sivasuthan at Upper Edge Surgery. A valid referral lets you claim the Medicare rebate and gives Dr Goutham your history before your visit.

Can my hernia be fixed with keyhole or robotic surgery?+

Many hernias suit keyhole (laparoscopic) repair, and Dr Goutham offers robotic-assisted repair with the Medtronic Hugo system for selected, more complex hernias. Open repair is also an excellent option. He recommends what fits you, and explains why.

When is a hernia an emergency?+

If the lump becomes hard, very painful or will not push back in, and you feel sick or vomit, the bowel may be trapped (strangulation). Seek urgent care straight away.

How soon can I get back to work and driving?+

Many people return to desk work within 1 to 2 weeks; manual work needs longer. Driving is usually fine once you can brake sharply without pain and are off strong painkillers — often about a week.
