endoscopy / gastroscopy

Dr. Goutham, a compassionate and skilled endoscopic surgeon, provides personalised care to all his patients. With a focus on minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Goutham offers gastroscopy as a safe and effective method to diagnose and treat upper gastrointestinal issues. Here is everything you need to know about this procedure.

What is an Endoscopy / Gastroscopy?

An endoscopy / gastroscopy, also known as an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). Using a flexible, narrow tube called an endoscope, equipped with a camera and light, the procedure provides high-definition images of your upper GI tract. These detailed visuals surpass the accuracy of other forms of imaging and allow Dr. Goutham to assess any abnormalities directly.

Why is an Endoscopy Performed?

An endoscopy helps diagnose and manage symptoms such as:

  • Persistent upper abdominal pain

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Heartburn or acid reflux symptoms

It can also be used for:

  • Taking biopsies to test for Helicobacter pylori or other conditions

  • Treating bleeding or removing polyps

  • Stretching narrowed areas (dilation)

  • Removing foreign bodies

How to Prepare for a Endoscopy

Preparation for an endoscopy is crucial for its accuracy and safety. Follow these guidelines:

  • Fasting: Avoid eating for at least 8 hours and drinking for 4 hours before the procedure.

  • Medication: Inform Dr. Goutham or his team about any medications you are taking. Some medicines, like blood thinners, may need to be temporarily paused.

  • Medical History: Provide a comprehensive medical history, including allergies, diabetes, or any previous reactions to anesthesia.

  • Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you after the procedure, as sedatives will impair your reflexes and judgment.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Endoscopies are performed as a day procedure, with the procedure itself typically only taking about 15-20 minutes. Here is what happens:

  1. Sedation: You may receive a sedative via an IV line to help you relax, or a local anesthetic spray may be applied to your throat.

  2. Positioning: You will lie comfortably on your left side.

  3. Endoscope Insertion: The thin, flexible endoscope is gently passed through your mouth and into the gastrointestinal tract. This does not interfere with breathing and is generally painless.

  4. Examination: The camera displays images on a monitor, allowing Dr. Goutham to examine your oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Biopsies or minor treatments may be performed if necessary.

  5. Completion: The procedure concludes, and you will be monitored in recovery for about 30 minutes.

Post-procedure care

After the endoscopy:

  • Recovery: Rest in the recovery area until the sedatives wear off. You may feel mild bloating or a sore throat, which usually resolves quickly.

  • Restrictions: Avoid driving, operating machinery, consuming alcohol, or signing legal documents for 24 hours. Postpone air travel for 48 hours (domestic) or 14 days (international).

  • Diet: You can resume eating and drinking as soon as you feel comfortable. If a specific post-procedure diet is required, Dr Goutham will discuss this directly with you.

Dr. Goutham will discuss the results with you before you leave and provide guidance on follow-up care or treatment if required.
